For a summer bereft of bright comedy (Exhibit A?Grownups, B?Get Him to the Greek), the French Micmacs is a beacon. The title probably deriving from the Algonquin term for "allies," this farce/caper has a band of scruffy junk yard rebels creating havoc for two arms dealers who may have been responsible for protagonist Bazil (Danny Boon) receiving a stray bullet to the noggin as well as his father bring blown apart by a land mine.

Nathaniel Hawthorne's "Young Goodman Brown"

A minimalist thriller in one respect, then classy allegory in another, The Endangered spreads the guilt for racism generously between whites and blacks while spending its brief time on the bare bones of a problematic murder set in a faux New England village (Granville, Ohio), fitting to a Hawthorne world of sin and retribution.

For the rest of us, see Cyrus to enjoy American ensemble acting at its best: Molly (Marisa Tomei) and her 21-year old son, Cyrus (Jonah Hill), live in a very close relationship short of Oedipal but too close for either's growth.

Although Despicable Me winks at behemoth Pixar with a little robot like the Pixar desk lamp before the titles, Despicable Me does one better in the cynical category.
