Construction is expected to begin soon to connect the Towpath Trail to Cleveland. The trail follows the route of the Erie Canal from Tuscarawas County to Akron, and officials Monday broke ground on the final leg. Anne Glausser of member station WCPN in Cleveland reports.
A Chillicothe man is facing charges in connection with a shooting Sunday on St. Margaret Road. Chillicothe police say an argument ended with gunfire, sending Nicholas Morgan to a hospital with leg injuries. Derek Thomas is charged with assault.
A Delaware man will serve 58 years in prison for raping a young girl. 55-year-old Oral Slaven was sentenced Monday on rape and gross sexual imposition charges. Slaven was convicted last month of assaulting the child in Delaware and Union counties over a three-year span.
Akron-based Goodyear says second-quarter profit rose by more than 50 percent due to lower production costs. The tire maker reports a profit of 85 million dollars, compared with a 40-million dollar profit in the same period a year ago. Revenue fell 8.4 percent to 5.15 billion dollars as the poor European economy reduced tire sales. The results are below Wall Street expectations. Goodyear now expects full-year sales to decline by 5 to 7 percent from 2011 levels.

The Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board meets today to take the first step toward selecting an artist to design a Holocaust memorial at the Statehouse. Circleville firefighters say an early morning blaze has destroyed the Circle D Roller Rink on East Main Street. No injuries have been reported out of the blaze at the skating rink and bowling alley that has been in town for more than 50 years. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
Ohio Republican Congressman Steve LaTourette will not to seek re-election. State Party Chair Bob Bennett would not comment on LaTourette's reasons for retiring, but other party insiders say it is over a dispute with U.S. House leadership on committee assignments. He is a member of the House Appropriations Committee.
