Algae Toxin Levels Prompt Erection Of Warning Signs At Buckeye Lake

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources has posted warning signs at Buckeye Lake boat ramps after tests conducted last week show high levels of algae toxins in the water. Separate, non-recreational tests conducted by the Ohio EPA showed high toxin levels, which prompted water testing by ODNR. Toxin levels tested at more than twice the acceptable amount. The signs caution people not to swim in the lake. Toxic algae blooms feed on phosphorous from farm fertilzer runoff and untreated sewage. Several inland lakes as well as the Great Lakes have seen toxic algae blooms in recent years.
