Berhalter Signs Contract Extension

The Columbus Crew SC this week agreed to a contract extension with the team’s head coach.

Mike Foley reports.

Columbus Crew SC Sporting Director and Head Coach Greg Berhalter had been signed through the 2017 season, and though the team didn’t specify the details beyond this “multi-year extension,” He's expected to remain in Columbus for several years.

“It feels great. The support that we’ve been given from Mr. Precourt, we all feel and it makes it a great working environment. Not only that, you’re motivated to do well and want to succeed and continually improve because you know you have the support behind you. And that’s a big factor in deciding to extend this deal is because of the working environment that’s created and the direction that I feel the club is going from both the technical side and the business side.”

Investor-Operator and Chair Anthony Precourt called Berhalter invaluable to the Crew and a critical part in maintaining the team’s success moving forward. Precourt would not comment on whether other teams had pursued Berhalter. Regardless, the head coach says his focus remains on his Columbus squad.

“In this job I’ve learned that you need to put all of your effort into today. That’s where my focus is. By extending the deal here, it proves that this is where I’m focused. We put a lot of energy into trying to improve and that’s certainly the focus as we move into 2016, how can we be better in all aspects of the game than we were last year.”

Berhalter’s team last season captured the Eastern Conference Championship and a spot in the MLS Cup, losing to Portland. He’s one of just four current MLS head coaches to win at least 29 games their first two seasons.
