cleveland.com

A man who has staged protests saying the Cleveland Indians' Chief Wahoo mascot is racist has pleaded guilty to stealing money from federal grants aimed at helping Native Americans.

71-year-old Robert Roche of Cleveland conspired to divert money from the American Indian Education Center he directed. Roche and Craig McGuire, a consultant from Lewis Center, embezzled at least 180 thousand dollars from Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration grants, and Roche diverted 77 thousand for his personal use. Sentencing is scheduled for August 29.
