City Council To Choose New Member This Afternoon

ayresforcolumbus.com

Columbus City Council tonight is expected to appoint a new council member from the 13 finalists announced earlier this month.

Northland Community Council President Emmanuel Remy and Rob Dorans, an attorney for the Affiliated Construction Trades Foundation of Ohio, are the front-runners for the seat vacated when Zach Klein became city attorney. Remy worked on the Franklin County Democratic Party’s successful fight against a 2016 ballot issue that would have expanded council and created council districts. Dorans has strong union support. The runner up in last November's elections, Jasmine Ayres, is considered at best a long-shot. She is a member of the Yes We Can coalition of local Democrats that has been pushing change in the county party.  The coalition is scheduled to hold a demonstration outside of City Hall this afternoon, protesting council's appointment process. Members say the system favors political insiders and people who have business with the city, and keeps diverse viewpoints off of the panel. The council members, all Democrats, are not expected to select a Republican. The last Republican to serve after being elected or appointed on a full-time basis was Jeanette Bradley in the early 2000s.

Jim has been with WCBE since 1996. Before that he worked as a reporter at another Columbus radio station, and for three newspapers in Southwest Florida.
