CMHA Could Make Two Poindexter Village Buildings Historical Landmarks

columbuslandmarks.org

The Columbus Metropolitan Housing Authority is studying whether to classify two buildings at the first public housing project in the city as historical sites. 33 of the 35 buildings that comprised the former Poindexter Village public housing project were demolished three years ago. The complex opened in 1940. CMHA has said it plans to save only one building and intends to use it as multipurpose space. But supporters, including the James Preston Poindexter Foundation, say they want to see the buildings converted into a museum. The Ohio History Connection's board of trustees is expected to vote on pursuing a site plan in mid-December. The housing authority says it'll evaluate any proposal.
