Commission Deciding On Damages In Housing Discrimination Case

The Ohio Civil Rights Commission is weighing a final decision in a five-year-old case in which a landlady allegedly discriminated against undercover fair housing testers. A 2009 complaint claims Helen Grybosky told testers with disability dogs that pets weren't allowed or required an extra deposit. A second complaint claims the woman told a tester with a child that she could only rent a downstairs unit at a higher cost. An administrative judge previously upheld the allegations. At issue are damages and attorneys' fees. The Fair Housing Resource Center in Painesville first investigated Grybosky. Her attorney says no discrimination occurred because testers, not real renters, were involved.
