Columbus City Council last night voted to lift the moratorium on the number of taxis licensed by the city that has been in effect for several years.
The move takes effect in April. The local Vehicle for Hire Board recommended the move after dozens of licenses went unclaimed. Council also approved a 2.2 million dollar contract with a private firm to design a new Linden Park and Community Center. Columbus Recreation and Parks director Tony Collins says the new center will cost 18 million dollars and include space for community organizations.
Council also approved spending 370 thousand dollars to purchase 400 more body cameras for police. Assistant Safety Director Robert Stewart:
The city announced plans to purchase body cameras in 2016 after several police shootings locally and around the country.
