Demonstration Held During Wendy's Shareholders Meeting

Dublin-based Wendy's says Todd Penegor is now the company's CEO and president, a move that was previously announced late last year. Shareholders yesterday made Penegor and his predecessor, Emil Brolick, members of its board of directors. Protestors held demonstrations at yesterday's shareholders meeting to draw attention to a national consumer boycott of the chain called for by a group of U.S. farm laborers who call themselves the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, based in Florida. The coalition hopes the boycott will cause the chain to pay a penny-per-pound fee for its tomatoes to supplement some farmworker wages. Wendy's chair Nelson Peltz owns a home in Florida.  Wendy's has said it requires suppliers to follow a code of ethics and it is up to them to pay their employees. Wendy's officials have also told coalition members it no longer purchases Florida-grown tomatoes.
