Environmentalist Says State Taking Some Good Steps To Combat Climate Change

An intergovernmental panel says the world continues dealing with the impacts of global climate change. Ohio Public Radio's Andy Chow reports.

A comprehensive, international report warns that climate change is happening all around the world and at a faster than expected pace.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which was partially created by a United Nations program, says the world is not well-prepared for the problems that climate change can bring.

More than 400 people contributed to writing the report which found that high levels of warming are already affecting agriculture and water supplies. The group also claims that climate change will lead to high food prices, resulting in increased poverty and hunger.

The Ohio Environmental Council has often criticized state policies, but the OEC’s Trish Demeter says the state has implemented several policies to lessen the impact of climate change.

Demeter: “We’re improving the efficiency of our existing power fleet and deploying more and more emission free technology such as wind, solor, waste-heat recovery—in order to help meet our demand for electricity.”

Another report from the panel, which will evaluate options for mitigating climate change, is expected to be released later this month.
