Ground To Be Broken Today On New Offices For Franklin County Coroner

Moody Nolan

Franklin County officials are scheduled to break ground today on a new Forensic Science Center.

The 30 million dollar facility on Frank Road at the former Harmon Elementary School site will have a bigger toxicology lab and more space for samples from crime scenes than the current offices of the county coroner on King Avenue. The site was acquired through and land swap and the building is expected to open by 2020. The coroner's office is handling a growing number of cases thanks to a rising population, the statewide opioid epidemic and other factors. The office handled more than 19 hundred cases last year and performed nearly 14 hundred autopsies.
