Local YWCA Completes Griswold Building Expansion

ywcacolumbus.org

The Columbus YWCA this week took the wraps off of its renovated South 4th Street facility. The 25-million-dollar-project at the old Griswold Building includes more low-income private housing units, increasing the capacity from 60 to 91 women. They also include a working area with computer stations and a new ballroom that will be available for rent.  The facility provides affordable housing for low-income women, many of whom are victims of domestic violence, chronically homeless or dealing with mental illness or addiction. It offers wellness and recovery support, employment assistance, a GED program and financial-literacy classes. Tenants pay what they are able to and can stay indefinitely. The project is funded with public incentives and community donations.

Jim has been with WCBE since 1996. Before that he worked as a reporter at another Columbus radio station, and for three newspapers in Southwest Florida.
