New City Council Member Is An Assistant City Attorney

Columbus City Attorney's Office

The all-Democratic Columbus City Council last night appointed a new member.

31-year-old Democrat and assistant city attorney Jaiza Page was asked by city officials to apply for the seat vacated by Hearcel Craig, who was elected to the Ohio House last November. Page will fill out the remainder of Craig's term, and will run for election in the fall.  Her appointment continues the long-standing practice of naming council members to fill the remainder of the term of a vacant seat, thus giving the appointee the advantages of incumbency when she/he must go before the voters for re-election. It is a major reason why there are no Republicans holding any of the seven council seats. Page was selected over Columbus School Board member Ramona Reyes, Elizabeth Brown - the daughter of Democratic U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown - and six other finalists. She says her goals include neighborhood safety and maintaining the city's triple-a bond rating. She worked on issues of neighborhood blight while in the city attorney's office. Swearing-in ceremonies have yet to be scheduled because Page must resign from the city attorney's office.
