Ohio Lawmakers Reach Compromise On Puppy Mill Measure

respectyourdog.com

State lawmakers have negotiated a compromise aimed at reining in abuses by puppy mills while heading off a ballot effort to place restrictions in the state's Constitution.

The Ohio House approved a bill satisfying terms of the deal between majority Republicans and the Humane Society of the United States. Sponsoring State Representative Brian Hill says the Humane Society has agreed if the bill becomes law it will keep further puppy mill restrictions off the ballot for 10 years. The society hopes Ohio's move to tighten requirements will set a new national standard.
