State Panel To Hear Appeal Of Second Fracking Permit In Athens County

The company proposing to put a second fracking wastewater well in the Athens County community of Troy Township will make its case to the Ohio Oil and Gas Commission. A group of environmental advocates is appealing a drilling permit issued to West Virginia-based K&H Partners. The Athens County Fracking Action Network is concerned about groundwater contamination. More than 100 people protested at the site on Saturday, and eight were arrested. The commission will let company representatives participate in the proceedings. The Ohio Attorney General's Office wants the appeal dismissed, saying permits may not be appealed to the commission. Athens City Council in December voted to support the County Commission's objection to the proposed well.
