Study Show Rise In Traffic Deaths In Cities Without Red Light Cameras

iihs.org

A new study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety on red-light cameras shows getting rid of them could lead to more deaths.  The study found removing the systems led to a 30 percent increase in traffic deaths.  Columbus is one of at least 158 communities that have ended their traffic enforcement camera programs in the past five years. Researchers compared trends in annual crash rates in 14 cities that no longer have the systems with those in 29 cities in the same regions that continue to use them . The study also shows crashes of all types at intersections with traffic signals rose by 16 percent. Researchers think it suggests the systems deter other dangerous behavior by drivers.
