Study Shows Growing Achievement Gap Between Poor and Rich School Districts

An analysis of Ohio Department of Education school report-card data shows the achievement gap between low-income and wealthier school districts continues to widen. The review of 2014-2015 report-card data by the Ohio Education Policy Institute was requested jointly by the Ohio School Boards Association, the Buckeye Association of School Administrators and the Ohio Association of School Business Officials. After grouping school districts according to the percentage of economically disadvantaged students, the analysis shows there is a more than 23-point gap between the average four-year graduation rate in districts with fewer than 10 percent economically disadvantaged students and districts with greater than 90 percent economically disadvantaged students. The study also shows ACT test participation rises as a district's percentage of low-income students falls.
