A study by Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland shows President Trump's revised travel ban could worsen Ohio's shortage of medical professionals. Physicians from around the globe provide medical care in Ohio, and researchers say one in 14 comes from a Muslim-majority country. Researcher Jacqueline Dolata says two percent of those physicians are practicing in rural and under-served areas, where ten percent of Ohioans live.
Dolata says foreign-born physicians are more likely to practice in specialty fields, like internal medicine and psychiatry. Dolata says medical schools are now in the process of filling residency spots. She worries some hospitals might think twice about selecting students from Muslim-majority countries.
The American College of Physicians released a statement in response to the ban, saying it opposes discrimination, religious tests, and denying entry into the U.S. to people with legal visas.
