SWACO Cancels Contract To Build Separation Facility

The Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio has canceled its contract with the firm hired to build a 100 million dollar facility that would separate refuse from recyclables. SWACO says Florida-based Team Gemini failed to pay rent on 350 acres worth of land next to the Franklin County Landfill, and was late on 600 thousand dollars worth of rent payments over the previous two years. The company has declined comment. Under the deal, Team Gemini would have paid SWACO for collected materials, sold them and dumped the trash at the landfill. SWACO signed the deal in 2013. At that time, then-director Ron Mills told WCBE the facility would help extend the life of the landfill.

The project was supposed to be completed in June, but the company failed to start construction work.

Jim has been with WCBE since 1996. Before that he worked as a reporter at another Columbus radio station, and for three newspapers in Southwest Florida.
