With heat indexes soaring over 100 degrees Columbus is opening cooling centers, extending pool hours and keeping "spraygrounds" open later through Thursday to give residents a break from this week's heat.

Cooling centers at Barnett, Beatty, Douglas, Glenwood and Marion-Franklin Community Centers will be open from 9am-8pm, with regular rec center activities from 9-6.

Dodge, Driving Park, Glenwood, Lincoln and Tuttle pools will be open 1pm - 8pm. Capacity is limited and online registration is needed And the Blackburn, Linden, North Bank and Scioto Southland spraygrounds will all be open 11 am - 8pm. Capacity is limited, and will be monitored. More information is available at ColumbusRecParks.com/KeepCool

Columbus Public Health offered other recommendations to beat the heat, including staying in air conditioning whenever possible, including public places like malls, libraries and movie theaters. Avoid strenuous activities when possible, or move tough tasks to morning or evening. Drink plenty of water, but avoid alcohol and caffeine. And check on family members, friends and neighbor who may be struggling with the heat.
