Heat Wave Safety Tips from NOAA & The American Red Cross

Today's forecast calls for a heat index around 101 degrees. Here are some tips from NOAA for staying safe during extreme heat conditions:

  • Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.

  • To reduce risk of heat related illnesses during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recomends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments.

  • Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Heat stroke is life-threatening. Call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number immediately

  • Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing, and drink plenty of water.

Also, be aware of those in your neighborhood who are elderly, young, or sick, as they are more likely to become victims of excessive heat and may need help. Be sure to check in on them if possible to make sure they're okay.
