Researchers Near Breakthrough Fighting Drug-Resistant Bacteria

National Institutes of Health

Researchers at Ohio State and Harvard Universities say they are on the cusp of a breakthrough in fighting E. coli and other drug-resistant bacteria. They've identified a protein in the E. coli bacteria that makes it impossible to treat with antibiotics. Their report in the journal "Science" says attacking the protein renders the bacteria harmless within minutes, a discovery that could help drug companies develop better antibiotics.
