Ohio Third grade students are taking the first round of the Third Grade Reading Guarantee test this week.
Students have to pass this test by the start of next school year to be fully promoted to fourth grade. Ohio Department of Education spokesperson John Charlton says the scores are counted in teacher evaluations and district report cards.
Charlton notes this is an end of the year test, and this first administration is more to determine where kids are in their reading rather than an expectation that they will pass. Kids will be given the test again this spring and this summer, and will also have other opportunities to re-take it or do other assessments if they still don’t get a passing score.
