State Releases New Guidelines For Evaluating Charter School Sponsors

education.ohio.gov

Ohio schools superintendent Richard Ross has issued new guidelines for evaluating charter school sponsors in the wake of a data-tampering scandal in the state's school choice office. The framework dovetails closely with the recommendations of an independent panel charged with reviewing the system that came after then-School Choice Director David Hansen acknowledged omitting failing grades from certain sponsor evaluations so as not to "mask" successes elsewhere. Hansen, who's wife serves on Republican Ohio Governor John Kasich's presidential campaign, later resigned. The panel recommended last week state sponsor reviews should reflect the performance of online and dropout recovery programs. Those were the programs whose F grades Hansen in some cases omitted. Ross says academic performance measures for charter school sponsors should align with those of traditional public schools.
