Family Of Man Killed By Columbus Police Files Lawsuit

The City of Columbus has declined comment on a lawsuit filed by the family of a mentally ill man shot and killed by two police officers in 2014. The attorney for the family of 34-year-old Joseph Givens says the officers failed to follow police division policy for dealing with a mentally ill suspect. An internal review and a grand jury cleared officers Kyle Beatty and Stephen Asch of any wrongdoing. The officers said Givens charged at them with a knife. The family attorney says Asch failed a polygraph test when he applied for his job in 1999. He also failed background checks with the New Albany, Sharon Township and Reynoldsburg police departments. Asch is one of two officers involved in a fatal shooting in 2011. They were also cleared of wrongdoing.
