Fifty-three percent of Newark voters yesterday approved a proposal to eliminate penalties for possessing small amounts of marijuana. The measure makes the penalty for possessing less than 200 grams a minor misdemeanor with no fines, incarceration, probation or other punishment. The measure also addresses discrepancies between state and local law. The group that put the measure on the ballot says it's a major change that will give law enforcement more time to focus on the opioid epidemic.
