Judge Rules Transgender Ohio Teen May Undergo Hormone Therapy

A judge's custody ruling opens up the possibility a transgender teen in Hamilton County will receive hormone therapy despite his parents' opposition.

Judge Sylvia Hendon on Friday granted custody of the 17-year-old to his grandparents and said they have the right to determine what kind of care he pursues at Cincinnati Children's Hospital's transgender program. Hendon also ruled hormone therapy can't begin until the teen has been evaluated by a psychologist not affiliated with the hospital. The ruling also gives the grandparents the right allow the teen to change his name. The teen's parents deny he's transgender and sought Christian-based therapy for him. Hendon's ruling says the parents agree he should continue living with his grandparents and attending high school, where he excels.
