Former U.S. House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio says the Republican Party he knew is gone.
The West Chester Republican spoke yesterday at a policy conference hosted by the Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce.
Boehner also discussed the 2016 election, saying the two most surprised people in the country on election night were Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Boehner says the political system has become far too polarized and compromise makes elected officials vulnerable.
Boehner also talked about Congress' low approval rating and says while 95-percent of those with whom he served feel they have the best interests of the country at heart, the other five-percent "ought to just go away." He also tried to calm fears regarding the confrontational style of President Trump, saying the country will live through it.
