President Trump has falsely claimed for months that mail-in ballots are unreliable and easily to rig, but Ohio Republicans say that's not the case.
At today's coronavirus press conference, Governor Mike DeWine declined to comment on Trump's false claims, but Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted says Trump's concerns don't apply to Ohio. Trump has narrowed his objections to mail-in voting to those states that automatically mail out ballots to all residents. Husted, who is a former Secretary of State, says in Ohio voters have to mail in a ballot request first, and that the system has been well-tested.
"Ohio's process of mail-in ballots is the same process that we used the last time, when the President won the state by eight points. So, nothing has changed about it; it worked well during the president's previous election, it will work well in this election. There are numberous checks in balances both in requesting your ballot, receiving your ballot and returning your ballot."
Husted says Ohio's approach to mail-in ballots is the result of a bipartisan collaboration. That system will be tested this year - the number of ballot requests submitted so far is more than double the requests filed in 2016.
