20 CCS Schools To Start Year Online, Due To High Heat

20 Columbus City Schools are starting the school year with remote learning Thursday, because of the extreme heat and humidity.

The schools either lack air conditioning or are in the process of getting systems installed or upgraded. Parents of students who need a Chromebook for remote learning are asked to contact their schools principal.

Teachers and staff are expected to report to buildings Wednesday. Teachers and aides will be able to work remotely on Thursday and Friday.

The 20 affected schools are:

High Schools

  • Whetstone High School
  • Columbus Alternative High School
  • Eastmoor Academy

Middle Schools:

  • Arts Impact Middle School
  • Columbus City Preparatory School for Boys
  • Johnson Park Middle School
  • Mifflin Middle School
  • Westmoor Middle School
  • Yorktown Middle School

Elementary Schools

  • Broadleigh Elementary Schools
  • Columbus Gifted Academy
  • Como Elementary School
  • Fairwood Elementary School
  • Hubbard Elementary School
  • Maize Elementary School
  • North Linden Elementary School
  • Siebert Elementary School
  • Valleyview Elementary School
  • West Broad Elementary School
  • Westgate Elementary School

According to a statement sent to parents late Wednesday night, district officials will take several measures to make schools without building-wide air conditioning more comfortable, including fans, open windows, and the use of creative outdoor spaces for instruction. Schools will be supplied with bottled water, and staff and students will be encouraged to take "mask breaks" out of doors.

In July the district annunced that masks will be required on buses and in school buildings.
