Ohio’s first Asian-American state senator says she was subjected to discrimination by Ohio Highway Patrol troopers on Statehouse security duty this week.
Democratic senator-elect Tina Maharath of Canal Winchester says on social media it happened on her way to a meeting with the Women's Caucus. She says a trooper spoke to her in a manner indicating he thought she did not speak English. The patrol says it is investigating. Democratic State Representative Emilia Sykes, who is black, has also said she has been the victim of discrimination by Statehouse security.
