Behind the Mic: The Radio Journey of Catlin Farkas

“Welcome to today’s edition of Front Row..with your host, Caitlin Farkas…”

We’re taking it way back this Wednesday to the fall of 2011, when I first joined the WCBE family. Although I had been a long time weekend listener to 90.5 FM, I was unaware of internship opportunities until I entered the professional writing minor program at The Ohio State University.

Quickly,  the internship at WCBE went from a writing focus to editing audio. Then I began recording the events calendar for on-air use. You might even remember the segment called “Front Row” as it carried on after me for quite a few years. I caught the public radio bug instantly and developed an insatiable appetite for the non-profit realm.

After my quarter long internship with the station I returned for more…and then again…and then again. I just kept showing up. I often tease that I kept coming until they couldn’t turn me down. In 2013 I became a weekend board operator and loved it. Even those 5am winter mornings cleaning off the satellite by the studios didn’t scare me away.

One of the most intriguing aspects of WCBE was the love reciprocated from the community. The picture of me is from the second screening of, “This Is WCBE” in 2012 that took place at Studio 35 in Clintonville. From the first day I walked in as an intern, to now…I’m amazed at how WCBE is the little engine that could and will continue to be because of people like you!

Each year that WCBE brings fresh local music, news that matters and more is proof of a vision coming to fruition: from a classroom asset in 1956 to a community resource in 2019. Thank you for being a huge part of that!
