City Council Approves Capital Improvements Budget, Bans Non-Essential Travel To N.C.

Columbus City Council last night approved a resolution prohibiting municipal employees from making non-essential trips to North Carolina in response to that state’s law requiring people to use bathrooms based on the gender on that person's birth certificate. Shannon Hardin is an openly gay council member who sponsored the resolution.

Columbus has been recognized for being gay-friendly, and all seven Democratic council members got campaign support from the LGBT community. Franklin County commissioners, also Democrats, recently approved a similar ban. Council also approved the 2016 Capital Improvements Budget. The 1-billion dollar spending blueprint is the largest in city history. It will fund infrastructure repairs and other projects. 450 million dollars is devoted to repairing the sanitary sewer system. Sponsoring council member Priscilla Tyson says the panel also added 2.25 million dollars in amendments, including money for housing projects.
