Columbus City Council last night formally codified Mayor Andy Ginther's executive orders issued earlier this year regarding immigration. Under the newly passed ordinance, city employees arresting or denying someone services based on their immigration status is prohibited. The measure does not declare Columbus a sanctuary city because officials don’t want to become a target of President Trump, who has threatened to pull federal funding for cities that become sanctuaries. But the law is a response to Trump's orders blocking immigration from six Muslim-majority countries. Democratic City Council president and City Attorney candidate Zach Klein.
Klein said earlier this year the city would study whether to become a sanctuary city, but Klein now says immigrant groups suggested the designation not be enacted.
