Cleveland Joins Other Ohio Cities In Creating Indigenous Peoples' Day

Cleveland City Council has voted to formally declare August 9th as Indigenous Peoples' Day.

Council members say the goal  is to honor Native Americans and recognize the discrimination they've suffered over the centuries.

The original proposal was to replace Columbus Day, a federal holiday in mid-October that celebrates a controversial figure for many Native Americans. The city's Italian-American community rallied and that part of the proposal was dropped.

Oberlin and Cincinnati previously replaced Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples' Day.  Columbus no longer recognizes the day as an official holiday, instead shifting attention to Veterans Day in early November.
