Columbus To Consider Use Of Police Body Cameras

Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman says the city will consider outfitting police officers with body cameras. Coleman says the goal is to help improve police-community relations. Coleman says the cameras will help improve transparency and accountability, but the multi-million dollar cost and privacy concerns are the main barriers to getting them on the streets.

Coleman wants the state and federal governments to help pay for the devices, and says he will name a committee of police officials and citizens to explore the feasibility of body cameras. He called for a change in state law to address privacy concerns. Coleman says the city will also review how it handles internal-affairs complaints, and hold ongoing community forums. The Ohio Task Force on Community-Police Relations recently issued its own recommendations for strengthening policing amid a series of controversial police-involved shootings and in-custody deaths in the state and the nation.
