Columbus Department of Public Service road crews have filled more potholes this winter than they had at this time last year. The department says crews have filled 19,600 potholes since the beginning of November, up from 14,000 at this time last year. Temperature swings freeze and thaw pavement, causing the potholes, but less snowfall this winter has allowed workers to repair them rather than just clear the streets. The city also says there have been fewer requests from the public to repair potholes this winter. The lack of snow also makes potholes easier to spot. Ohio Triple-A says it handled 39 hundred tire-related calls between January 1 and February 6, down 300 from this point last year.
