Following the lead of Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman, City Council plans explore the idea of equipping police officers with body cameras. Plans currently call for a council committee to study how other cities use the cameras. Last May, Coleman said the city would consider using the devices. Ohio State University police began a pilot program several months ago. State lawmakers are also considering legislation that would require police to wear cameras. Statistics show about a third of police departments in the U-S are using body cameras. Jason Pappas, president of the Columbus Fraternal Order of Police, says he opposes the use of the devices. Franklin County Sheriff and Democratic Mayoral Candidate Zach Scott says he supports body cameras. City officials estimate the cost of a camera system could exceed 7 million dollars, with storage costs of 2 million a year.
