Columbus Officials Considering Tougher Regulations For Keeping Domestic Farm Animals

So many people in Columbus are keeping chickens and other domestic farm animals on their property that the city is proposing new rules governing how they are kept. Columbus Public Health says a growing number of complaints about backyard fowl are moving officials to consider an annual permit renewal and inspection process. Currently, permits need to be obtained only once. The city responded to 140 complaints last year, compared with 30 in 2010. Many residents without permits who are confronted by inspectors get rid of the animals once they're informed of the requirements needed to keep them. It is not clear when city council will consider the proposals.
