Columbus Schools Closed Today Because Of Excessive Heat

Columbus City Schools are closed today, due to continued high heat and humidity.

Interim CCS Superintendent John Stanford says it's not just the high daytime temperatures that make un-air conditioned buildings unsafe:

The district says six additional buildings now have air conditioning, but a third of the districts' schools don't.  While some cities like Akron and Cleveland have chosen to close only un-air conditioned buildings in their districts, district spokesperson Scott Varner says the number of families who have students in multiple schools and the students who take classes in more than one school makes that solution impractical here.

A native of Chicago, naturalized citizen of Cincinnati and resident of Columbus, Alison attended Earlham College and the Ohio State University. She has equal passion for Midwest history, hockey and Slavic poetry.
