Columbus State Nears Fundraising Goal For Hospitality, Culinary Arts Building

Columbus State Community College officials say they are more than half way toward their fundraising target for a new building that will house an expanded hospitality management and culinary arts program.

The three-floor facility named after Columbus restaurant owner Cameron Mitchell will double the program's enrollment capacity and feature a student-staffed restaurant, a retail café and a large banquet center with onsite catering. The school is raising 10 million dollars in private philanthropy to support the project. Columbus State president David Harrison says Mitchell Hall represents more than just a new building.

Mitchell chairs the fundraising campaign and jokingly admits he never thought his name would be tied to an academic building. But Mitchell says his involvement stems from a love of the city and the industry.

Additional funding for the project includes 10 million dollars in state capital funding and project financing secured by the school. The City of Columbus has also designated more than 7 million for streetscape, utilities, and parking improvements to support the project and surrounding area.
