Columbus State Program Wins Federal Grant

Columbus State Community College has won an 11.5 million dollar federal grant to expand its "Credits Count" program in seven central Ohio school districts.

Jim Letizia reports.

The program allows high school students to take college-level courses and get support in career counseling and tutoring. The program is focused primarily on low-income students. The college is one of 13 grant money winners chosen from a competition among more than 400 organizations. It is the largest grant CSCC has ever received. Columbus-based American Electric Power and JPMorgan Chase are providing the required matching funds. The participating districts all have a high number of low-income students. They area Columbus, Groveport Madison, Hamilton, Licking Heights, Reynoldsburg, South-Western and Whitehall. The U.S. Department of Education says up to 10 thousand local students could be eligible for the program.

Jim has been with WCBE since 1996. Before that he worked as a reporter at another Columbus radio station, and for three newspapers in Southwest Florida.
