Council Settles Another Lawsuit Alleging Police Use Of Excessive Force

WCBE Files

Columbus City Council last night approved a 237 thousand dollar settlement of a lawsuit filed by a man shot and wounded by police in 2013. James Barber alleged excessive use of force after he was shot at a west side hotel. Police were responding to reports of a stabbing involving Barber's co-worker. Officer Robert Schoolcraft noticed sharp objects in Barber's hands and shot him in the shoulder. City Attorney Rick Pfeiffer says the co-worker was stabbing himself, and Barber was trying to help him by removing sharp objects from the hotel room.

Earlier this year, Schoolcraft was fined and sent to 'john school' after pleading no contest to a charge of solicitation.
