A decision from the U.S. Coast Guard is pending on whether to allow toxic waste from fracking on the Ohio River. Texas-based GreenHunter Water owns a fracking waste facility in Washington County. It wants approval to ship up to a half-million gallons of waste per barge load. The company says barge transport is safer and more cost-efficient than hauling the waste by truck. But environmentalists like Sasha White say the proposal could threaten drinking water quality for more than 5-million people.
The Coast Guard has not said when it will make a decision.
