The attorney for the doctor charged with murder in the deaths of 25 hospital patients says his client was trying to provide "comfort care", not euthanization.
Richard Blake denies allegations William Husel ordered overdoses of painkillers for patients to hasten their deaths. Husel pleaded not guilty Wednesday and is being held on a 1 million dollar bond. Columbus-based Mount Carmel Health System fired Husel in December. It found he had ordered potentially fatal drug doses for 29 patients who died over several years. Amy Pfaff's mother, 63-year-old Beverly Schirtzinger, was among the patients whose deaths prompted murder charges. She says she's pleased Husel has been charged but still wonders about his motives.
Attorney Gerry Leesberg represents 17 of the 25 alleged victims. He says a status hearing is scheduled June 18th in their lawsuit, and says he will continue seeking a settlement.
Husel faces at least 19 wrongful death lawsuits. Eight others were settled. David Austin’s wife, Bonnie, passed away under Husel’s care. He says he doesn't know if he should blame Husel.
The families plan to be in attendance during Husel's next court appearance.
