Family Money Going To Build Public Memorial Where Tamir Rice Was Killed

youtube.com

The Tamir Rice family will donate an undisclosed amount of money to the City of Cleveland in order to get approval to build a memorial for the 12-year-old at the recreation center where he was shot and killed in November of 2014.

Family attorney Subodh Chandra says the amount is being kept private due to active litigation. The city has agreed to honor a request by the Smithsonian's new African-American history museum to delay demolition of the gazebo where Rice was killed. The museum's senior  curator says it is talking with representatives from Black Lives Matter about options to preserve the structure,  which became a makeshift memorial after Rice's death in 2014. The Rice family recently reached a six-million dollar settlement with the city of its lawsuit alleging wrongful death and excessive use of force.
