Henry Green's Family Sues City, Officers In 2016 Shooting Death

The estate of a Columbus man fatally shot by two police officers who said he opened fire on them has sued the city and the officers, alleging wrongful death and civil rights violations. Officers Zachary Rosen and Jason Bare shot 23-year-old Henry Green in June 2016.

The federal lawsuit filed Thursday alleges wrongful death and unreasonable seizure. It also alleges constitutional violations and racial discrimination.  Green was black. The officers are white.

Assistant City Attorney Westley Phillips says that office looks forward to defending the city and police. He says the officers acted appropriately.

Police said the officers identified themselves and Green ignored commands to drop his gun. Green's family and a friend walking with him say police didn't identify themselves. A Franklin County grand jury declined to indict the officers.  Protest marches followed the shooting.
