Historic Preservationists Trying To Save Ohio University Building

woub.org

The planned demolition of a century-old campus building has stirred up a historic preservation fight at Ohio University. The brick building known as the President Street Academic Center is expected to come down over the summer. The university's board of trustees approved the 1.5 million dollar demolition in January. The site of the 1911 building on the National Register of Historic Places will hold a new building for the university's business college.  But Athens County Historical Society & Museum Executive Director Tom O'Grady says the building is significant because it was designed by Ohio architect Frank Packard. He designed a number of buildings on and around the university and at other colleges.  The new business building is expected to cost 15.2 million dollars.
