Home Explosion Investigated As Hate Crime

Wayne County Sheriff's Office

Wayne County authorities say a house explosion is being investigated as a possible hate crime after racial slurs and a swastika were found spray painted on the home's garage and neighboring property.

The Sterling home of an interracial couple was empty while repairs from an electrical fire last month were complete.  A neighbor reported the explosion around 1 am Wednesday.  Authorities say the house was completely destroyed.  No injuries were reported.

The homeowners said they have lived in the home for 23 years, and have never experienced any racial prejudice.  They say they do not intend to rebuild.

The FBI and state fire marshal investigators have been called to help investigate.
